What is Fairtrade?
“Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system.” If you want to find out more about how Fairtrade impacts there is an article here.
What does it mean?
This means that DkIT has made a commitment to supporting and using Fairtrade, to ensuring that Fairtrade products are available in as many places as possible and that we will raise awareness of Fairtrade and the benefits that it brings to producers. Practically we were able to gain recognition because:
-DkIT adopted a Fairtrade purchasing policy
-Fairtrade tea/coffee is sold exclusively in all cafes
-Fairtrade tea/coffee is served at all meetings
-At least two Fairtrade products are available in all retail units
-There is a commitment to promote Fairtrade in general and hold a Fairtrade fortnight
The purchasing policy and details are available to read here:
In order to develop Fairtrade on campus this year any of the following actions would help:
– adding more Fairtrade products to those already available on campus
– tea/coffee clubs opting for Fairtrade
– providing Fairtrade tea/coffee in vending machines
The Fairtrade project is promoted by the Green Campus Group in DkIT. We are very grateful to all the champions in this group and also to
The canteen staff & managers
The staff & manager of the Student Commonroom
Staff in Hospitality
