A tribute to Neil McCann

Many tributes have been paid to our most illustrious former President who became a giant in European and world business. I wish to record his generosity of time, advice and financial support which he gave to the town he loved, Dundalk.

He was a son of Dundalk with a drive and commitment to achieve success on the world stage while remaining at all times a local man. He was unique in that all in Dundalk were proud and delighted that he achieved so much.

As President of the Chamber he set up the company that became Dundalk Enterprise Development Company. This company, part funded by the International Fund for Ireland, (another company that was blessed with his drive and energy), has offered start up assistance to the next generation of companies, the most notable of which is Digiweb.

He was one of the team that encouraged foreign investment into the town, most noticeably Heinz. He also worked with others in providing seed capital to start up businesses in Dundalk.

The chain, I as President wear, was a gift from Charles McCann and Sons to the Chamber.

He never sought recognition for his generosity but the giving nature was known to most volunteer organisations in the town. All lists of potential donors started with Neil McCann whether that organisation was a charity, youth group, football club etc.

Today Ireland needs leaders who can have a dream and the determination to achieve. The words of President Obama YES WE CAN capture the essence of what this giant in world industry from our town believed in and achieved.
