Are you interested in attracting more tourists to your area? Have you tried everything you can think of to bring more people in? Would you welcome professional advice from experts on tried and tested, successful tourism offers?

You may have tried promoting all sorts of attractions to get more customers but there is a well-established field of tourism that you might have overlooked – the battlefield! Battlefield tourism is big business across the world. American Civil War (150 years ago) sites such as Gettysburg attract millions, while Flanders attracts millions more on the trail of both the First World War (100 years ago) and Waterloo (200 years this year).

Louth, halfway between Belfast and Dublin, is, in many ways, the Flanders of Ireland. Louth has been at the heart of the action for millennia, from the semi-mythical Cú Chulainn, Queen Maeve and the Táin Bó Cuailgne, to Edward Bruce and the Battle of Faughart, through Hugh O’Neill and the Nine Years War, the Confederate War and Oliver Cromwell and the Battle of the Boyne Louth has been the site of many decisive battles. More recently Louth was badly affected by ‘the Troubles’. Now is the time to trade in notoriety for fame and success in tourism, using our battlefield history.

Come and join us for the annual Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Cross-border Tourism Conference 2015. Dundalk Chamber in association with Brendan McSherry, Heritage Officer with Louth County Council has brought some very high profile speakers together for this event. We will have presentations on Belfast’s Black Taxi tours and on the development of the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre. One of the founders of the field, Prof. John Lennon of Glasgow Caledonian University, will introduce us to ‘Dark Tourism’ while other experts will talk about battles of Louth, Meath, Monaghan and Armagh and the castles and other defences that lie across our lovely countryside. We’ll also be hearing about the rather ghoulish, “Horrible Histories” or “CSI” aspects of battlefield history.

There will be a free Workshop which delegates can attend after the lunch. Kieran Swail of Southern Regional College and Wayner Denner Digital Marketer will discuss Podcasts for Tourism – an emerging digital channel.

Sponsored by Crowne Plaza Dundalk, Haines Fleet Management and Matthews Coach Hire with the support of Louth Local Enterprise Office this will expand on the key issues and the collaborative actions required to maximise a regions social and investment potential, as a major tourism destination.

Participants will include representatives from tourism sectors along with funding bodies, public sector representatives, business organisations, educational institutions, cross border organizations and local authorities.

There is also an opportunity to showcase your products/services as we have a number of stands for Exhibition purposes. Stands cost €50 plus vat and call Brenda below for more details.
