Based on a real story, Papusza tells the dramatic tale of the popular but controversial Gypsy poet, Bronislawa Wajs who was one of the first Romani to put on the page poems that came out of what was traditionally an oral literary tradition. Her work reached a wide audience in 1950s Poland, but success took a deep personal toll, as she dealt with resentment from her own community and charges of collaboration with the communist government in suppressing her own people.
