During the American-Mexican War (1846-48) some 3000 immigrant soldiers deserted the US Army with more than 500 of these – mainly Irish – joining the Mexican side where, led by John Riley from Galway, they fought as The San Patricio Battalion. Performed by Stephen Jones (Red Rock, Love/Hate, Nowhere Fast), the play tells the story from the point of view of Thomas O’Byrne, who finds himself caught up in the war while trying to escape arrest.
